Puerto Montt
With more than 150.000 inhabitants, it's the capital
city of the 10 Region ( Los Lagos). Located on the "seno
de Reloncaví", it is the gate to the southern side of
continental Chile and to the insular world of Chiloe
archipelago.
Brief history
It owes its name to Manuel Montt, a chilean president who
encouraged german immigration to the "new" incorporated
territories, after the conquest of huilliche natives, which
called the place as Melipulli (four hills).
Founded in 1853 by Vicente Pérez Rosales, it was the obliged
pass for accessing the lake region in the north, during the
following half century. This was the route used by first
european settlers of Bariloche.
As it was connected by railway, first to Llanquihue lake, and
later to Santiago, in 1912, it became the outlet to the sea
towards the southern territories of the country, with a
sustained growing, just broken by the strong earthquake of
1960.
Nowadays, Puerto Montt is a vigorous administrative center,
extended to Puerto Varas, and possesses an important fishing
industry, salmon culture and distributes a large amount of
tourists, with a good structure of shopping centers, hotels
and gastronomy.

city of Llanquihue lake. It has already been that since
early past century, besides have been the gate for
reception and delivering of merchandise for the lake
outskirts. From Puerto Varas, you can visit Petrohué
waterfalls and Pérez Rosales National Park. To get
Puerto Montt, we suggest to do it by the old road across
