HUNTING

Ciervos colorados

Deers

Wild animals in the region are protected by the law and hunting is regulated; however, this is an important activity in the area, especially the red deer and the wild boar hunting. You can find private preserves and even locations inside the National Parks.
In both cases, the sport hunting season starts in March/April and lasts for about 40 days.
There are three kinds of deer allowed to be hunted, all of them exotic. They are the red deer, the dame deer and the axis. The first one is the most precious trophy.
A hunting excursion inside a private preserve must be arranged with the owners or traders directly. It usually includes transportation, meals, guide, horses and the management of the hunted pieces.
The preserves inside the national parks are auctioned in the corresponding offices during December. After the place and date are adjudged, the hunter must hire the rest of the services by himself.
On the other hand, native fauna is totally protected and hunting is forbidden, being it a crime in any season. Survival of local deer (huemul and pudú pudú), which require the same food and habitat, is threatened by the exotic ones due to their quick reproduction.
