Located on the SE shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, at 775
m.o.s.l, with more than 90.000 inhabitants and more than
20.000 beds, it is the second tourist center in the
country, after Mar del Plata. It's also the headquarters
of Nahuel Huapi National Park. It has a modern airport,
railway and several road transportation.
Its demographic growing caused the expansion of the city
in all directions, specially towards the National Park.
At present, Bariloche offers a wide range of attractive
for all kind of visitors along the whole year. Ski and
other winter sports stand out in winter. This season,
besides others intermediary, captures many groups of
students and retired aged people. Tourist agencies,
discos and shopping are devoted to this particular kind
of tourism, which started on the 70s. and is not quite
good for an harmonic developing and image quality.
In summer, mountaineering, trekking, walking, canoeing,
rafting, lake outings and caves explore, increase the
amount of options for the visitors.
History
The city's name comes from" Vuriloche", the mythical andean
pass used by the natives. Located south of mount Tronador and
hidden for a long time, it became a fabulous explore adventure
for conquerors and missionaries. The last cacique in the
region was tehuelche Modesto Inacayal. After the desert
conquest, Francisco Moreno rescued Inacayal and put him to
work at La Plata Museum. San Carlos was the first name for the
town, after Carlos Wiedherhold and other german settlers
established there in 1895, coming from Chile. It was
officially founded in 1902.
Since 1908 national government began many projects to promote
the Patagonian development. Hired for that mission, geologist
Balley Willis directed studies for creating the railway and
organize the best use of the ground.
In 1922 was created the South National Park (future Nahuel
Huapi), one of the first parks in America. When the train
reached Bariloche, the interchange with Buenos Aires was
improved. Catedral ski center was good for winter tourism and
Bariloche Andean Club, founded in 1931, built mountain
shelters and trails, making the outskirts an important
trekking center.
